Extensive modernization inside the Berlin Concert Hall

May 17, 2023

The Berlin Concert Hall is a historic landmark on the Gendarmenmarkt in the center of Berlin, originally designed by Schinkel between 1818 and 1821. After reopening in 1984 following a comprehensive reconstruction true to the original, it is now the venue for the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, one of the seven major Berlin orchestras. It is one of the most important cultural institutions in the capital and holds around 350 in-house events that achieve an average occupancy rate of 85% and an additional 300 rentals per season. The success of the Konzerthaus is due in no small part to the numerous innovative and in part digital convert and educational offering that make up its profile as a format house. One striking example is the format #spielzeit, a monthly stream on the gaming platform Twitch, which as a two-and-a-half-hour live stream, places high technical demands on the sound and image direction. In the concert business of the house, mainly four rooms with different room acoustics and sound technology requirements are used: the big hall, the small hall, the Werner-Otto-Saal and the music club. In addition, there are recordings and broadcasts, some of them live, by major radio and television stations, as well as numerous events from the rental business, some of which have very high technical requirements, such as the annual broadcast of Opus Classic from the Konzerthaus. The aim of the comprehensive modernization of the stage management system, which has been carried out at the Konzerthaus Berlin over the last ten years, was the complete AV networking in the high-quality broadcast standard of all halls and control rooms, a full-area intercom system in the main and adjacent buildings as well as equipment with streaming technology. For this purpose, the room acoustics were optimized, the audio control technology was renewed and the fiber optic infrastructure for audio and video signal processing was installed.
